During the 1940's, it was restricted by Hollywood for actors to show their bare navels. With this came in the existence of the belly ring. What Hollywood decided to do was place a jewel over the navel thus making it possible to show off their bellies which has evolved into the belly button ring. Belly rings today are considered a beautiful and sexy accessory that shows off ones stomach creating attention. Belly rings can be fun, flashy, and pieces of artwork. Also included in this blog is current pictures of celebrities who have their navel pieced. Check them out!
Placing a beautiful ring over the navel requires that the belly button be pierced. As with any piercing this can get infected so it is very important to know which materials should be used. The safest materials for belly button rings are gold (at least 14K), silver, surgical steel, titanium, niobium, rhodium etc. While at a lower cost to you avoid gold imitation and silver plated ones because they are easily tarnished and corrode when they get into contact with water and other fluids. These rings can also break easily so it is not a sound investment.
There is internet site after internet site offering Belly Rings and accessories. Each business runs sales but it is very important to consider the quality of the ring versus finding the cheapest. Stay away from companies who do not sell good quality rings. While these may seem like a good deal in the long run it may be more of a hassle than it is worth. The ring may cause an infection or fall a part shortly after you purchase it. With this in mind you may be wondering; “so how do I find a good quality ring at a great price?”
The best times of the year to take advantage of belly ring offers is during the winter holiday season. While the season may be over for now it is a good idea to find a company you like and get onto their mailing list. This way when they are gearing up to launch their new collections and want to get rid of their current stock they will offer rings at a significally lower price. You may be able to find the ring of your dreams and pay a faction of the price to obtain it.
It is extremely important to know your belly ring length and diameter to ensure proper fit of your belly ring. If you don't know your ring size when ordering Please use the reference guide below. Most piercing places use a 14 Gauge needle but you should make sure this is the case prior to ordering. Also an important note Gauge sizes go down in diameter as the number gets larger. So a 14 Gauge diameter is "thicker" than a 16 Gauge. (Our 18 Gauges being the smallest in diameter).

So what do you do now that your pierced?
This should go without saying but it is extremely important to keep the area clean to prevent infections. DO NOT use soaps with dyes or fragrances (I used the "regular" old fashioned Dial). Using these soaps could create a whole bunch of problems you don't want. Your piercing should be cleaned three times a day making sure the ring is rotated while doing so. It usually takes about six months for your body to heal itself. As simplistic as this may sound cleaning/rotating/common sense is all you need to do. **Also wear jeans/pants that won't constantly brush up against the piercing throughout the day. This could actually start an infection. I've been asked countless times "How will I know if I have an infection". Believe me you'll know!! To put it into words you may not like if "puss" is coming out of the piercing you've got an infection. Yes, cleaning will help but you should go to your doctor if it gets worse. *IMPORTANT* If you don't take care of yourself your only option is to remove it, wait till it heals and then pierce it again. Honestly I can't think of anything worse.
So what do you do now that your healed?
So what I did was go back to the person that pierced me and had them remove the starter ring. I did this because I didn't know how to remove the captive without hurting myself. Yes, twelve years later, I now know how to but I was a novice at the time. Basically if your uncomfortable with removing it this is your best option. Also if you don't know the gauge and length your piercing is you can find out at this time. It is important to only wear rings that fit you. I also have a diagram of how to measure rings on my website. Only measure the barbell... DON'T include the ball and keep your ruler flat (don't dip down into the ring) because you won't get an accurate measurement.
I hope this information was able to help!! If you have any doubts with this advice don't take it. AND If your piercing is infected go to your doctor, don't listen to any advice on the web. Only your doctor should diagnose and treat you.
